Adivasi Groups Rally in Kokrajhar, Renew Demand for ST Status

Adivasi organisations have intensified pressure on both the Centre and the Assam government after thousands participated in a major rally in Kokrajhar, demanding urgent action on long-pending commitments — especially the push for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The protest march, organised by the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) along with eight allied bodies under the Coordination Committee of Adivasi Organisations, started from Dimolmgaon Playground and culminated at Green Field. Demonstrators accused the government of years of inaction on crucial promises linked to the Adivasi peace accord and wider welfare initiatives.

AASAA president Godwin Hembram said that the peace agreement signed with Adivasi militant groups has seen little progress, leaving rehabilitation and development programmes stalled. He urged the government to immediately implement socio-economic measures promised under the accord, warning that continued delays were eroding public trust.

Protesters also demanded the revision of daily wages to ₹551, the distribution of land pattas, and the official recognition of Adivasis as Scheduled Tribes — a step leaders say is vital for securing constitutional safeguards and long-term socio-economic upliftment.

The rally concluded peacefully at Green Field, but organisers cautioned that the movement could escalate if the government fails to respond swiftly.
