18 Rohingya detained in Cachar, Assam

Cachar

Eighteen Rohingya, including woman and children detained by Cachar police in Kalain area of Cachar district on Saturday. They were detained by the locals, who later handed them over to Police.

As per sources, the Ronghiya individuals were seen loitering suspiciously in the market when local residents confronted them. When they were questioned, they revealed that they had entered India illegally several years ago after fleeing a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. Since then, they had been living in Hyderabad, working as daily wage labourers.

However, fearing the ongoing nationwide crackdown on illegal foreigners, the group fled Hyderabad by train and arrived at Badarpur railway station, eventually reaching Kalain with the help of middlemen. The detainees reportedly confessed that they were planning to cross back into Bangladesh through the international border in Cachar with assistance from local agents.

Upon receiving information, Kalain Police arrived at the location and took all 18 Rohingya nationals into custody for interrogation and legal proceedings. Notably, over the past few months, authorities have detained more than 250 illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals along the India-Bangladesh border in Cachar while attempting to return to Bangladesh.
